How to Start

Setup takes 2 minutes. The first game takes about 20. Tonight works.

What you need

  • A ping-pong table

Standard table with net, paddles, and ball. Any size works.

  • A chessboard

Any chess set. Place it near the table so both games are accessible between sets.

  • 4 players (doubles — strongly recommended)

This is the optimal configuration. Two teams of two. The debate between teammates about chess moves is half the fun.

  • 2 players (singles) works too

One-on-one is faster and more intense. Great for experienced players who want a focused match.

  • Agreement on rules

Agree before you start: king can be captured, sets end at 2-point advantage. That's it.

First game walkthrough

  1. 01

    Set up both games

Place the chessboard in starting position. Set up the ping-pong table. Teams stand on opposite sides.

  2. 02

    Play the first set

Standard ping-pong rally. First side to build a 2-point lead wins the set.

  3. 03

    Make your chess move

Winning team (or player) huddles for a moment and makes their move on the board. In doubles: discuss briefly, then execute.

  4. 04

    Opponent responds, new set begins

The other team makes their chess reply. Then everyone returns to the ping-pong table.

  5. 05

    Play until the king falls

Continue until checkmate or king capture. The first game will feel weird. The second one will feel brilliant.

You already have everything you need.
